Tree removal, stump grinding and wood hauling scope.
Taking a tree down is only half of a removal quote. What happens to the heavy trunk logs, how low the stump is cut or ground below grade, who calls 811 for buried utilities before grinding, and whether wood chips are hauled off or left in a pile can double the labor on the job.
Six items every tree removal quote should answer
Check each removal bid against these six lines so you never discover a 3-foot stump or ten tons of trunk wood left at the curb after the truck leaves.
- 1. Felling vs sectional rigging or crane
- In an open field, a tree can be felled from the ground. Over a house, deck, fence, or septic tank, the crew must piece the tree down on ropes, use a Spider lift, or bring a crane, and lay plywood or HDPE ground mats to stop heavy wood from cratering the lawn.
- 2. Flush cut vs stump grinding
- "Cut flush to the ground" leaves the solid wood stump and root flare in place a few inches above the grass. "Grind stump" brings a mechanical cutter wheel (often on a separate day after utilities are marked) to chew the stump below soil level.
- 3. Grinding depth and surface roots
- Shallow grinding (4 to 6 inches below grade) is enough to sow grass seed over top. Replanting a new tree in the same spot or pouring concrete requires deep grinding (12 to 18 inches) and chasing major surface buttress roots.
- 4. Stump grindings (mulch mound) cleanup
- Grinding a large stump creates a surprisingly tall mound of shredded wood and dirt. Most quotes leave the grindings mounded in the hole to settle unless you ask for excess grindings to be hauled off and replaced with topsoil.
- 5. Brush chipping vs trunk wood hauling
- Branches go through the chipper, while large trunk rounds require a mini-skid loader and log truck. Confirm that both brush and heavy trunk logs are hauled away (or specify if you want firewood-length rounds stacked on site).
- 6. Underground utility locates (811) & private lines
- Public 811 locates mark utility lines to the meter, while the homeowner must point out private sprinkler pipes, landscape lighting wires, invisible dog fences, and septic lines near the stump.
