ANSI A300 tree pruning cuts vs tree topping.
When a tree service writes "trim oak tree" on a quote, one crew may plan to remove deadwood only while another plans to lop 30% of the live canopy back to stubs. Naming the exact pruning objective from the ANSI A300 (Part 1) standard ensures every contractor prices the same cuts.
Pruning Specifications
What a written pruning specification should state
Under ANSI A300, a pruning specification gives the objective, the cut types, the branch diameter range, and the location in the canopy.
- 1. Crown cleaning (deadwood removal)
- Removing dead, dying, diseased, or broken branches without taking out healthy interior foliage. A complete quote states the minimum branch diameter to remove (for example, dead branches 1.5 inches and larger throughout the crown).
- 2. Crown thinning
- Selective removal of small live branches near the outer edge of the canopy to increase light penetration and reduce wind drag. Thinning should remove no more than 15% to 20% of live foliage in a single season and should never strip interior "lion-tailed" branches.
- 3. Crown raising (clearance)
- Removing lower limbs or secondary hanging branches to provide vertical clearance over a roof, driveway, sidewalk, or street. State the exact clearance height in feet (for example, 8 feet over the walk, 14 feet over the street).
- 4. Crown reduction
- Shortening the length of a stem or limb by cutting back to a live lateral branch that is at least one-third the diameter of the cut stem. Used to pull limbs back from a roofline or building wall without leaving stubs.
- 5. Why tree topping is unacceptable
- Heading large upright limbs to indiscriminate stubs starves the root system, leaves wide heartwood wounds open to internal decay, and triggers dense clusters of weakly attached water sprouts that break out in future windstorms.
- 6. Climbing spikes (gaffs) on live trees
- Spurs puncture the cambium and bark on every step up the trunk. Specify rope-and-harness spikeless climbing (or an aerial lift) on any tree that is being pruned rather than removed.
